It's very tempting, and undoubtedly would be a very satisfactory system. But to stay with your earlier points about cost/benefit, I'd be springing for 90-odd freet of Dyneema, in a size thick enough...

Thanks for that reply, Stumble.
With external halyards, the tapered endura idea may not be best.
I guess I'm over-analyzing this, trying to get some utility out of a temporary messenger line and...

Spare halyard--what's the best line?
I've got masthead sheaves for 3 halyards, so want to rig a light-weight line in the spare.
The boat is a heavy, 33-ft cruiser and I use 7/16" and 3/8" sta-set x for my halyards.
I'm not planning to...

Sounds like we're on the same track, Allene.
My tentative plan is to run 50 or 60 feet of 5/16 staset-x from the cockpit through a series of fairleads that are already along the bulwark on one side....

Wait a minute---(smack forehead)---if you put the bungy inside the length of the 12-strand, then stretching the bungy keeps the line taut. But stretch it more, and the dyneema takes over the...

Brion, I like your idea--it's the best of both sides. Though Ian's lazy jack plan is quite elegant, too.
Question--using Spectra and your idea of a tackle with the hauling line inside the boom, how...

What is this stuff?
It's a nylon brait-type rope--8-strand, 1/2". It has a single yellow tracer in one of the 8 strands. I know there are different brands that resemble Yale's product. Does anybody have rope of a known...

That's a pretty cool idea, Allene. Thanks for the link. I'll try making one up and see how it works.

Thanks, Stumble.
I used 5/16" Amsteel Blue for my lifelines, mobius-spliced per B.T.'s book.
But for the short span of the gates, until I find out how to splice a proper gasket of 12-strand single...
